What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the injection of FDA-approved Asclera® (polidocanol) solution to improve the appearance of varicose veins and spider veins (telangiectasias) of the legs. The solution damages the vein, which then shrinks and is absorbed by your body over time.

Am I a candidate for Sclerotherapy?

Dr. Hooper and Dr. Jackson will determine if sclerotherapy is the right treatment for you based on the type of veins you wish to have treated. Sclerotherapy is FDA-approved to treat small, uncomplicated spider and varicose veins. Larger, bulging, or painful veins may require treatment by a vascular surgeon.

How is Sclerotherapy performed?

Asclera® solution is loaded in a sterile syringe and injected into the vein using the tiniest needle available. Most patients find the 15-30 minute procedure incredibly tolerable.

What is recovery like after Sclerotherapy?

You may experience redness, bruising, localized swelling or slight tenderness at the injection site after a Sclerotherapy treatment, but no downtime is expected. The wearing of graduated compression support stockings is required for 5-7 days after each treatment, so we recommend having sclerotherapy treatments done in the fall and winter months.

How long does Sclerotherapy last?

The treated veins generally disappear over a period of several weeks or months. Optimal results usually require 3-4 treatments, with a few weeks healing time in between. Annual or bi-annual treatment sessions may be necessary to maintain results.
